Mackie and Jarilyn | Melissaโ€™s Fashion Remix

We believe you don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe every season to create fun new looks! This week on Jackie and Marilyn, we are taking eight pieces โ€“ two tops, two bottoms, two dresses and two outerwear items โ€“ and mixing them into eight outfits. Shoes and accessories were limitless.

Melissa here with my fashion remix challenge. Boy, when Brianna brought up this idea I was like “That sounds Awesome!” but when I was faced with doing it I was like “Oh crap why did you agree to this torturrrree!” Haha, no, it’s really not that bad. I am notorious for having…not a lot of basics. My closet consists of ball gowns and sweatpants and not a whole lot in between, so I dreaded finding items that would mix and match well.

Once I did find these items, though, I was pumped and surprised how many possibilities for “new” outfits I actually had.

Outfit #1: Halfway to Easter

1-8outfitsAdmittedly, this is the most “fun” and least “fall” outfit I got out of the bunch. I like it, but I think it would be better suited for the spring rather than the fall as it’s just a whole lot of pastel. It might be better with a darker/more solid colored cardigan over it!

Outfit #2: Pop of Fun
2-8outfitsThis is usually not how I would style an outfit, as I usually go full force with something zany instead of adding the neutral blazer and shoes…but I like it! I will have to remind myself that sometimes simple is ok ๐Ÿ™‚
Outfit #3: Pitter-Patterns
3-8outfitsI have always been in awe of people who can layer collared shirts under things like dresses and sweaters (ahem, Brianna). It’s always been uncomfortable and frumpy-looking when I try it. I really love this look, but it took me a hot minute to get the collar to lay perfect, and it only cooperated for a couple pictures before it sat wrong over the dress again. I might have to face that layers are too much of a force to be reckoned with and leave it to the experts (ahem, Brianna).
Outfit #4: Gretal Goes To College
4-8outfits 4-HatThis outfit is probably the most “me” thing I ever could have done. All of the suede! All of the fall tones! All of the quirky vintage! I have never worn this vintage hat before even though I have had it forever and I think I finally found the outfit that it’s meant for!
Outfit #5: Green Team
In the fall I usually switch to more earthy tones of all my favorite colors. I end up wearing a lot of greens and dark blues because I don’t do well with black or gray outfits. I love that this outfit looks relaxed and in the fall field with out looking boring or monotone!
Outfit #6: Anchorwoman
This may be a little too matchy-matchy for some, but when you have some vintage 70s wear you’re bound to have some matching suede. It reminds me a lot of costuming for Christina Applegate’s character in the Anchorman movies, and I’m not mad about that. I also have found my new favorite pair of glasses from after returning for pairs. Success is mine!
Outfit #7: Back to Cool
7-8outfitsThis reminds me a lot of something I would’ve worn on my first day back to school (the most planned outfit of one’s fall!). I would always pick out some crazy stuff, but being on my parent’s dime, it would have to be functional as well. I would be too excited to wear one new thing so I would wear ALL THE NEW THINGS. I’m still this person, whether I have a first day of school or not.
Outfit #8:  Fall Ball
8-8outfitsI think this is the most balanced of the looks. Vintage, fun, but still approachable easy to pull off. A nice mixture of quirky and basics. If wearing floral in fall is wrong, I don’t want to be right!
Outfit that I loved the most: Gretal Goes to College (What can I say, I have a flair for the dramatic. I know not every day can be head to toe vintage and whimsy, but A LOT of days can if you play your cards right)
4-8outfitsOutfit that I loved the least: Pop of Fun. (I don’t hate it, but it ain’t me. I don’t look at it and go “yeah, I’d wear that.” More color please!)
2-8outfitsLike Brianna, I am pretty guilty of saying that I have nothing to wear and falling in to outfit ruts. I’ll take the lessons I learned from this challenge to heart and mix things up a bit more and maybe (just maybe) invest in a couple more “basics.”  Maybe one less heavily graphic printed item and one more plain-colored shirt. MAYBE. ๐Ÿ™‚

Jackie and Marilyn | Renaissance Royalty

The Renaissance Festival is here! This signals the end of summer but the start of a darn good time. My husband and I won tickets to go this year, so I’m glad we got to fit it in last weekend!
RennFest4As every year, I make sure to plan to go on “Pet Weekend,” because why wouldn’t you go on a weekend where you are guaranteed to see a bunch of dogs in costume? We saw a Mastiff there last year, which started our love affair and eventual acquiring of one with our dog, Brim.ย  He didn’t come with us this year, as he gets over stimulated and over heated pretty easily, but maybe when he is less of a giant puppy!
RennFest6 RennFest5I decided to dress up this year as royalty, although I really like the whole pirate and steam punk possibilities of the Renaissance era. I bought this head-jewel piece (I’m sure there is a nice name for it) last year at RenFest and had the vintage 1970’s dress since last winter. I’ve had a plan for quite some time! I even planned my hair cut (yet to be determined) for AFTER RenFest so that I could have long princess hair.
RennFest2 RennFest1I got this cool belt at a thrift store a couple years ago and haven’t had much chance or occasion to wear it. It’s actually velcro! Oh, the wonders of thrifting.
RennFest3By the end of the day I was covered in dust, dog drool, and turkey juice, but it was well worth it!

Jackie and Marilyn | Gunne Sax

If you’re my husband and hear “I found a Gunne Sax at the thrift store today!”…well you’d unfortunately know what it means because I talk about this brand too much. I have been obsessed with Gunne Sax dresses ever since I got this dress at a local thrift store when I was in high school.
GunneSax3GunneSax4These are dresses made in the 1970s and 80s that just scream boho chic, and they have developed quite a vintage collectors following as well.ย  If you check out Etsy, you’ll see that these babies are popular and do not come cheap. Also, stop looking at Etsy because you’ll want to buy them all.
GunneSax6 GunneSax7My dear sweet Goodwill gave me this almost PERFECT condition, fits me like a glove, totally twirlable Gunne Sax dress for $4. Thanks, Goodwill! I don’t blame them, it isn’t lined so when I picked it up it looks like a very cute but very homemade dress. It was already in my basket when I spied the Gunne Sax label on the inside. There is a bit of loose stitching on one of the straps, but other than that it’s perfect!
GunneSax8My favorite feature has to be the awesome lace up sides! They are real, so you can adjust them to let yourself breathe a little! Of course, I had to wear this the first day I had the chance, so I wore it to a local festival/friend’s birthday party without stitching the strap back up and it got looser. Silly me! It will spend some time in my mend pile but it was worth it.
GunneSax1I kept my red white and blue theme going with these cute envelope earrings from ModCloth and my trusty, nearly broken ModCloth sandals. Add some 70s sunglasses, and you’ve got a blast from the past!

Jackie and Marilyn | Good Goodwill Grab

Happy Summer, friends! I am currently writing this in my office, which is also a loft, which is also blasted hot! I don’t like sleeping in sweat but other than that, I don’t mind the heat (Sorry, Brianna). FULL ON SUNDRESS WEATHER COMMENCES!
I wore this dress this last weekend for a “date night” that turned into an “OMG WE HAVE SO MUCH TO DO” night. We ran around town running errands and doing wedding stuff but we also got some thrifting and vintage shopping in. I scored a mint condition, fits like a glove Gunne Sax dress for cheap, but that’s for another day.
Every store I walked into someone complimented me on this dress, and since they were stores that sold vintage, I also felt like they wanted to take it from me, haha. It’s something I found at Goodwill over Halloween and had yet to really wear until now. It really grinds my gears that Goodwill “hold” a lot of stuff for Halloween now that I would buy, at a cheaper price, any other time of the year. Guys, this is not a costume! It deserves to be seen! That being said, it’s a good way for me to go home with a lot of vintage dresses at once. Smooth move, Goodwill.
I had this dress for sale on Etsy thinking it was too baggy, but now I’m rethinking my ways. Thank you, universe, for not purchasing it. You have pushed it into my arms.
Being it the season of sweat, I decided to wear little else! Just some sunglasses and some trusty Target sandals. When you have a dress of this caliber, there really is no need to accessorize.

Jackie and Marilyn | Birthday Day II

Ok, so this outfit isn’t a suit…nor what I was born in, but I do take my birthday attire very seriously. I used to treat myself to a “birthday dress” every year โ€“ but people have started doing it for me!
Bday6My mom got me this vintage dress at a sale and couldn’t wait until my birthday to give it to me (I now know where I get this inability to keep gifts for others until their intended day). I wore this dress to a block party a couple days before my birthday as I planned on doing NOTHING on my actual birthday but sit in the sun by the lake. The weather didn’t want to cooperate with me on my plans so I actually ended up going on a “Thrift Store Tour” with my (patient!) family in tow and scoring a couple more birthday dresses. When it rains, it pours!
Bday8I chose this dress because I don’t know how many opportunities one gets to wear a 70’s long-sleeved maxi but during a cool day in May (I was still freezing) and because it makes me feel like a Birthday Princess, which is always a good goal to have when getting dressed.
Bday9 Bday10_Our yard is right next to a wonderful bike trail and these pictures were taken through the trees by where the trail starts. All of a sudden a pack of biker goes by and one yells “Look! A fair maiden in the woods!” Maybe I will have to start staging my own Robin Hood-esque plays in my yard.
Bday3I paired this look with a gold headband, gold earrings and my very beat-up sandals. Even maidens need to keep comfortable!
