Jackie and Marilyn | Primary Patterns

I love making outfits out of primary colors. Something about it feels so elementary. I also love mixing patterns. So this week I decided to do both!

IMG_2188I was a little worried all of the patterns would end up too loud together, but I think they work. And sometimes, you just have to go for it! I think having the yellow cardigan helps because it allows for a bit of a break from the polka dots and florals.

IMG_2190 IMG_2192If you’re going to mix patterns heavily like this, I think it’s not a bad idea to keep to two distinct patterns. While the skirt and flats are different, they are still both polka dots, which helps keep the outfit from being too much of a hodge-podge.

Shirt: Forever 21
Cardigan: Target
Skirt: Target
Flats: Old Navy

I’m finally starting to accept that it’s too warm for too many layers. I wore this cardigan in the earlier parts of the day and in a movie theater later that evening, but otherwise I kept it off. Fine, it’s summer, I yield! Just rememeber that autumn is right around the corner πŸ˜‰

Jackie and Marilyn | Fond Farewell to Floral

Even though there are certainly flowers in summer, something about floral is too classically spring. So I felt like I needed to get one more floral outfit in before the season officially turned.

IMG_2008This dress is originally from ModCloth, but I purchased it used from Vinted! I love how adorable the turquoise looks behind the floral pattern. I paired it with a dust blue cardigan to bring our some of the light leaves.

IMG_2024However, the weather is warming and I definitely didn’t wear this cardigan for long. This dress was actually capsleeved originally but the sleeves were oddly tight, so my friend Chelsey cut and hemmed the sleeves so it became sleeveless!

IMG_2031Everything about this outfit was in the details, making it look like a garden party of clothing! I chose matching floral oxford flats, some AMAZINGLY comfortable Lularoe leggings that matched the coral flowers, a vintage leaf belt, a teacup necklace and book flower earrings.

IMG_2061 IMG_2060 IMG_2054 IMG_2064A friend of mine once told me, based on how I dressed, that I should have been a kindergarten teacher (which she conveniently told me days before my graduation with a degree in English/Mass Communications). I feel like this outfit is a perfect example of how right she was. But I embace it πŸ™‚

Jackie and Marilyn | Courthouse Chic

Things are HEATING UP. I mean, it’s supposed to be summer (and the weather is stuck, for the most part, in spring), but also my life is going at the typical “Blink and you might miss it” summer pace. I have less than two months before I get married in my yard and the the to-do list is out the door!
1June2Thankfully we got one thing checked off the list last week: we applied for our marriage license! We both had to take time off of work since the courthouse for our county isn’t close to us and isn’t open on the weekends. It was nice to get up early, get dressed and NOT go to work.

1June1I could’ve gone to the courthouse in my PJ’s, but as it was a day I was hoping to remember, I wanted to wear something a little more fancy and a little more wedding-themed. I got this dress from an Instagram shop that always haunts me. The shop is so popular that you can’t really “claim” anything before someone else gets to it. I was 3rd back up for this dress, so I’m pretty lucky the first two fell through!

1June5The butterfly belt was a find from my thrift and garage sale shopping on my birthday. There was a “pop up” vintage shop on the side of the road (really) and I had to stop myself from buying EVERYTHING. Luckily this cute butterfly belt was only $1 so I had to have it. Throw in my favorite white sandals and some pastel sunglasses and you have an outfit to coax the sun out!
1June41June3The courthouse took a total of 15 minutes, so we spent the rest of the day going to birthday lunches with coworkers and registering for gifts. Now to fight the urge to elope….;)

Sunglasses: Target
Shoes: Zulilly.com

Jackie and Marilyn | Sort of Summer

As I put together my summer outfits, I tend to run into the same patterns: Dress or blouse-and-skirt/shirts combo, flat shoes, minimal accessories. Because I’m not a huge summer person, I feel like warmer weather is limiting because the more you add on, the higher risk you end up sweating all day. And it’s not even over 75 degrees in Minnesota yet, but I’m already falling into that trap!

But we are creatures of habit. The most important thing for me to keep things fresh during this time period is to wear as many patterns as possible and try fun, new color combinations.

IMG_1975A bold skirt with a subtle print blouse is perfect for this type of outfit! I liked mixing my polka dot blouse with the fox skirt. I also enjoyed how a Peter Pan collar can stand so well on its own so you don’t need a cardigan, blazer or other type of outer layer to complete it.

IMG_1951IMG_1955IMG_1911For colors, I mixed mint with my bold yellow Salt Water sandals because a) I wanted to wear these sandals and b) Mint and yellow are not two colors I would normally pair together. Mint tends to be something I pair with other pastels. However, I thought this color combination worked perfectly!

IMG_1910I added yet one more pattern with my button earrings. They make even the simplest summer outfits perfectly fun.

Skirt: Shop Ruche
Earrings: Brickyard Buffalo
Sandals: ModCloth

Jackie and Marilyn | Birthday Vacation

Last year my husband and I road tripped to Yellowstone in honor of his golden birthday. This year, it was a milestone birthday for me (25) so I got to choose where we went for a vacation. And I chose Nashville! It’s a city I’ve always been interested in, particularly with its music culture, so we made the 14-hour drive down. I don’t have a lot of vacation time at work so we left Friday and came back Monday. Yes, I realize this is insane. But it was also a lot of fun πŸ™‚ We stayed at an adorable Airbnb in the attic bedroom of someone’s home, which was actually pretty wonderful! (And inexpensive for the cost-conscious young traveler)
IMG_1676IMG_1693 IMG_1695I treated myself to a birthday outfit before the trip because I really wanted to go for a 1950s rockabilly look while I was traveling.
IMG_1706 This dress could not only double as a picnic blanket but is also super comfortable! It comes with a lined bodice so I could wear it on its own happily.
IMG_1777 IMG_1781The sandals are Salt Water, which I already own a pair of and love! One tragic piece, though: I forgot they have UK sizing and didn’t notice I ordered two sizes two big until they were already with me in Nashville! … but I still wore them. And crazily enough, no blisters! Just a testament to how comfy they truly are πŸ™‚ I want them in all of the colors.

Dress: ModCloth
Shoes: ModCloth

While on the trip, we visited Third Man Records (which I cannot express how excited I was to visit…it may or may not have been my spark of inspiration to choose Nashville to begin with), rode around the city using the bike share system (AMAZING), toured the Country Music Hall of Fame, saw a bluegress band and a gospel hymn band play, ate sushi and tacos, did some vintage shopping (I bought a dress and blouse that will definitely be featured in the future from a shop with the same name as my puppy! Perfection), bought a lot of records (hey, it’s called Music City!) visited a local brewery with the guy one of my friends is dating and his friends, who were incredibly welcoming, and just generally enjoyed wandering a new city. While we got in a lot of what we wanted to see and I am very content with the trip, I definitely want to go back again πŸ™‚ Hooray Birthday Month!

Jackie and Marilyn | Birthday Day II

Ok, so this outfit isn’t a suit…nor what I was born in, but I do take my birthday attire very seriously. I used to treat myself to a “birthday dress” every year – but people have started doing it for me!
Bday6My mom got me this vintage dress at a sale and couldn’t wait until my birthday to give it to me (I now know where I get this inability to keep gifts for others until their intended day). I wore this dress to a block party a couple days before my birthday as I planned on doing NOTHING on my actual birthday but sit in the sun by the lake. The weather didn’t want to cooperate with me on my plans so I actually ended up going on a “Thrift Store Tour” with my (patient!) family in tow and scoring a couple more birthday dresses. When it rains, it pours!
Bday8I chose this dress because I don’t know how many opportunities one gets to wear a 70’s long-sleeved maxi but during a cool day in May (I was still freezing) and because it makes me feel like a Birthday Princess, which is always a good goal to have when getting dressed.
Bday9 Bday10_Our yard is right next to a wonderful bike trail and these pictures were taken through the trees by where the trail starts. All of a sudden a pack of biker goes by and one yells “Look! A fair maiden in the woods!” Maybe I will have to start staging my own Robin Hood-esque plays in my yard.
Bday3I paired this look with a gold headband, gold earrings and my very beat-up sandals. Even maidens need to keep comfortable!
