Jackie and Marilyn | Maxi-mize Your Wardrobe

I can be a victim of my own boxes that I have placed myself in over the years – I can wear this, I can’t wear that – but lately I have been getting sick of the limitations I place upon myself based on how I perceive my body to be. So when I won a TJ Maxx gift card at a picnic for my office building last fall, I decided to use the funds to try something new to me: a maxi skirt.

IMG_2902Admittedly, I was a little terrified going into taking these photos because I am ever afraid of showing my “pooch.” Spoiler alert: I do not have washboard abs! But I’m ok with that, and I need to be ok with the photos I take as a result. It sometimes requires lengthy internal pep talks but I don’t want to miss out on fashion trends I enjoy simply out of fear! (One exception: peplum tops. Nope and nope.)

IMG_2900What I do like about my body in this skirt is it accentuates my hips in a way that I think is ultimately flattering for my pear-shaped body. The diagonal lines of the skirt help with that a LOT. And the skirt is SUPER soft and comfy! I love comfort so much!

IMG_2906Women all have their “one thing” they don’t like or like to hide about their bodies, and sometimes that changes with each day of the week. I’m not immune to this – far from it. But I find that the more I actively try not to care and just enjoy my body and what I am wearing, the happier I am overall.

So ladies, try something new! Test out a fashion trend that scares you! You may surprise yourself with how much you can “pull off” something you thought was an impossibility.

IMG_2950For details with this outfit, I chose some fun yellow shoes and accessories to feel sunny, because happiness! Also I chose tall wedges because this skirt is a little short on my frame 🙂

IMG_2964 IMG_2970What I Wore:
Shirt: Gap
Scarf: Random boutique
Earrings: A Delightful Shop
Skirt: TJ Maxx
Shoes: DSW

Now I want to hear from you. What are some of your fashion fears? Have you ever tried conquering them? How successful were you?

Jackie and Marilyn | Crittertastic

Amazing weather in Minnesota means one very important thing – my tattoo gets to come back out to play!

IMG_1068IMG_1071I was so excited to put on flats this weekend, and these owls shoes are one of my favorites. I decided to really dedicate and make this a crittertastic outfit by going full owl! Except the blouse, which is actually raccoons 🙂

IMG_1119I started the day with a cardigan bu it became unnecessary within two minutes. For the little bit of breeze in the morning, a scarf did just fine. I could have really dedicated with an animal-print skirt but this piece is perfect for neutralizing.

IMG_1080What was funny about the raccoon blouse was everyone who saw it assumed they were owls – and from far away and with all of the other prints, it definitely looks like it!

IMG_1124This outfit is a great example of pattern mixing – even though all of the items are animal print and most of them are owls, they are all unique and different. If you find a theme you want to stick with in your outfits, throw some contrasting patterns of a similar motif together!

Scarf: Boutique (can’t remember which)

Guys, the weather is so nice in Minnesota right now!

Just kidding. It’s a frozen hellscape.

We did have some slightly warmer weather this Saturday – and by slightly I mean above zero degrees – so my husband and I visited the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which is very close to our home. They have free admission for the whole month of January! A perfect opportunity to visit an indoor farmer’s market and take some photos 🙂

IMG_8329
IMG_8321I realize I am insane for not wearing a coat, but I promise I was drinking warm liquids and wearing my coat in between photos! The photo below features a two-week-old Jamberry application – my first full mani 🙂

IMG_8277

In full-on survival mode, I opted for some very warm fleece leggings and three – count ’em, three – pairs of socks. They were all similar tones of beige so it’s not noticeable. You’ve gotta stay warm somehow, right? What else am I supposed to do – wear pants and seasonal-appropriate boots all winter? Please.

IMG_8327IMG_8353Something about a cloche hat will always make me feel like I walked right out of the 1920s in the best way. All of the cloche hats I own are made with a wool blend material so they also double as extra warmth. Just don’t ask me to take it off, ever. Hat hair is real and it is here to stay.

Jackie Style: Chevron the Town

Where did all the snow go??? Well wherever it went, it was a short vacation because the snow came back this morning. IMG_6853I didn’t even bother wearing a coat when my husband and I went Christmas shopping this weekend, it was that warm. I made it across the parking garage without freezing and didn’t have to carry a bulky coat around the mall. That actually might be a Christmas miracle!

I’ve been pretty excited to wear this dress. Lularoe had an AMAZING Black Friday deal that I couldn’t pass up, and I got free shipping thanks to my consultant Amanda 🙂 But ultimately the selling point was when I saw this beauty.

IMG_6871It’s the same Amelia dress I already own but in a delightful mustard and grey chevron pattern. I love mustard and grey together. So much. It’s a color palette that is neutral but not boring and transitions into different seasons very well – it just depends on how you accessorize. Chevron is such a fantastic pattern, too. It’s so flattering! Unlike horizontal stripes, you don’t feel wider than you actually are.

IMG_6914I also cannot stress enough how comfortable Lularoe’s dresses are. I felt so at ease running around the Mall of America (yes, the very one) in this frock. And pockets!

IMG_6859I chose darker accessories for this dress, which included bringing one of my Brickyard Buffalo scarves back out. How could I not pair the forest green with the mulberry booties?

IMG_6891IMG_6887For jewelry, I went for some more of my favorite wood earrings from A Delightful Shop. I seriously cannot get enough of these. They’re so intricately designed but not at all flashy. It’s everything I want in my jewelry.

IMG_6895What I Wore:
Dress: Lularoe
Scarf: Brickyard Buffalo
Earrings: A Delightful Shop
Belt: ModCloth
Tights: Forever 21
Boots: ModCloth

And for anyone who’s been curious, I’m a week and a half into my second round of nail polish and it’s already chipping like mad. My three and a half week old Jamberry accent nail? Still going strong 🙂 I’m excited to do a full manicure soon!

IMG_6915I hope you’re all enjoying the holiday season!

Jackie Style: My Husband’s Closet

Greetings from Orlando! I am on a work trip for the week, not missing the snow too much. Florida weather isn’t my favorite, but I have to say this is a nice change of pace.

This week’s outfit inspiration came from my best friend! She stole one of her fiance’s flannel shirts and threw a cute belt over it, and I loved it! I had to try it for myself with something from my husband’s closet.
IMG_6468IMG_6470(Side note: Does anyone else think My Husband’s Closet sounds like an awesome store to buy thrifted men’s clothing or menswear-inspired women’s clothing, where the sales associates help you style the clothing with accessories to make chic outfits? This is a business venture I need to explore. I feel a lot like Tom Haverford right now).

Fun fact: Did you know men’s shirts are awesome? They’re soft, forgiving and the patterns rock. Plus, I kind of feel like a lumberjack.
IMG_6466My husband thought the shirt looked cute but he joked a bit about how it was his shirt, not mine. But hey, I washed it and put it right back! Maybe I will have to peer clearance racks and thrift stores for my own men’s shirts.

My hips were a little big for this shirt because my husband is a pole, which is why the last button isn’t fastened. But I don’t think it’s necessary. If you’re going to try men’s shirts, just remember it wasn’t technically built for a woman’s body. So you might have to go a size up because the shirt isn’t made for your girls…But it’s totally worth it. Who cares what number or letter is on the tag as long as you like how it looks on you?
IMG_6477I decided to pair the flannel with some brown accessories and boots. I also wore some amazing high waisted jeans because they are always awesome. Always. Just ask Melissa.
IMG_6478IMG_6481IMG_6483The best part about the belt? My best friend has the same one and wore it with her flannel 🙂
IMG_6484I took these photos last week during our winter storm. I came home after driving in snow when the sun had set, so I had to take photos inside. Probably going to happen a lot this winter. I bought a lighting kit with the funds from selling my old point-and-shoot, which should help! I’m lucky that I have inspiration from fellow blogger Alligator Toe about making it work under pressure 🙂
