Jackie Style: Fickle Weather

This winter can’t decide what it wants to do – it doesn’t know if it wants to be freezing or mild, snowy or muddy. Personally, if it stays at mild and muddy from here on out, I could live with that.

IMG_9540When the weather is this fickle, layers are more important than ever. Being able to throw a cardigan on or peel it off is key when that decision changes every hour. Oh Minnesota, you tricky minx.

IMG_9552 IMG_9568Something about argyle will always mean winter, which is why I chose this cardigan from way back when in my days of being employed at Old Navy. Back then, I would find random items at insanely low prices in the clearance department while rehanging garments, race them to the front of the store and put them in the “employee hold” bin before anyone noticed. I think the only reason I got away with this is because the store ended up essentially paying me in clothes. How I made it out of college without starving, I will never know.

IMG_9575Without realizing what I was doing, I wore my ribbed heart leggings with this week’s outfit because I enjoyed how the purple and green looked together. Apparently I’m already getting into the Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day spirit 🙂 I am hosting my annual Galentine’s Day party on Sunday and I am super excited! Tea, treats and ladies celebrating ladies.

IMG_9572Just in case you haven’t moseyed on over to our Instagram account yet, we are still running our giveaway! We can’t give away the earrings until we reach 500 followers, so make sure you tell your friends and encourage them to enter. And if they win and don’t want the earrings (but really, how is that possible?), maybe they will share them 😉 I can’t say enough how much I love A Delightful Shop’s earrings. Such great quality and a super low price. How cute are these cupcakes?!

IMG_9580I hope you have something fun planned for Valentine’s Day this weekend, single or coupled. It’s a day of love, and you loving yourself is a totally legitimate (and awesome) way to celebrate! I’d love to hear what you have planned in the comments!

Jackie Style: Ar-brrr-etum

Guys, the weather is so nice in Minnesota right now!

Just kidding. It’s a frozen hellscape.

We did have some slightly warmer weather this Saturday – and by slightly I mean above zero degrees – so my husband and I visited the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which is very close to our home. They have free admission for the whole month of January! A perfect opportunity to visit an indoor farmer’s market and take some photos 🙂

IMG_8321I realize I am insane for not wearing a coat, but I promise I was drinking warm liquids and wearing my coat in between photos! The photo below features a two-week-old Jamberry application – my first full mani 🙂

In full-on survival mode, I opted for some very warm fleece leggings and three – count ’em, three – pairs of socks. They were all similar tones of beige so it’s not noticeable. You’ve gotta stay warm somehow, right? What else am I supposed to do – wear pants and seasonal-appropriate boots all winter? Please.

IMG_8327IMG_8353Something about a cloche hat will always make me feel like I walked right out of the 1920s in the best way. All of the cloche hats I own are made with a wool blend material so they also double as extra warmth. Just don’t ask me to take it off, ever. Hat hair is real and it is here to stay.

Sweater: Target
Scarf: ModCloth
Hat: Target
Skirt: ModCloth
Leggings: Brickyard Buffalo (also seen here)

Jackie and Marilyn’s Holiday Survival Kit!

‘Tis the season to become a survivor! Whether you are beyond thrilled to see your family and friends, or shaking in your boots at the thought of hearing another story from your crazy uncle, the holidays are definitely a turn from our day-to-day existence! How will we survive this new territory?

Below we each share our five must-have for the holidays!

1. Spotify.

I cannot sit in silence. Ever. I have music playing from getting ready in the morning, the car ride to work, while working at my computer and back home again. I have been a Spotify premium member since it was possible in the U.S. and now I don’t know how to live without it. Many long car trips to go to everyone’s Christmas party demand specially curated playlists and the fact that I can download the playlists to my phone to listen offline means I won’t be without it when I spend a couple days without service in the boonies!

2. Onesie PJs

This is more of a general must but especially important on those nights where you get a little too merry with the dessert tray. No one has eve felt uncomfortable in a fleece tiger suit – and if you’re going to be in your PJs around your extended family, you might as well go all out.

3. Plants vs. Zombies 2

What happens when you have already seen the whole Internet because your day is full of nothing but lounging? This game is seriously addicting. I spent a couple Christmas breaks ago defeating the first one but this version has seemingly endless levels. I welcome the challenge.

4. Elf (The Movie)

Not only a holiday staple, I am willing to watch this movie in the middle of July. That being said, you are more likely to get people to watch it with you during the holiday season. Blonde Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell in tights? How could you go wrong? They have Elf-themed Facebook stickers now, so I have been communicating with those exclusively and will continue to do so until someone intervenes.

5. Fuzzy Critters

A great thing about going house to house and visiting everyone is knowing there is (most likely) a furry animal for me to snuggle wherever I go. I’ve never met a dog or cat that I don’t want to incessantly annoy with my love. Bonus points if they snuggle with you while watching Elf 🙂

Kit_Brianna1. DSLR camera

Having my camera on me at all time is a huge must during the holidays. It’s more of less my statement necklace 🙂 Taking photos of the joy on my nieces’ faces not only helps me document these moments forever but it also reminds me that the holidays are about happiness, even when I am at my Grinchiest.

2. Roasted Chestnut tea

TeaSource, a local tea shop in Minnesota, sells the most delightful chestnut-flavored tea and it is the perfect morning cuppa during the holiday season. “Chestnuts roasting in a Santa teapot…” Doesn’t have quite the same ring but it warms my heart in the best way.

3. Sweater tights

Just because it’s frigid in Minnesota doesn’t mean I am going to NOT wear a dress to every holiday gathering we attend! Therefore, sweater tights are a necessity.

4. Annual viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life

Two words: Jimmy Stewart. The man is more or less Christmas personified (excluding religious themes from the holiday). My husband and I have had a Christmas tradition since we began living together that, in the middle of the five Christmases we attend, we take at least one night to spend as “a family.” I make a roasted chicken, we open presents and we cry into our cocoa when George Bailey’s neighbors start singing “Auld Lang Syne.” Of all of our holiday traditions, this one is my favorite!

5. Onesie PJs

I didn’t know Melissa was going to choose these but ultimately I should have. But when a girl’s right, she’s right. I get really into the holidays so I have to go for penguin-themed pajamas. Have I waddled around the house while wearing penguin onesie pajamas to delight myself during the holidays? Of course.

As long as we both have our kits, we can make it through any holiday season! But what do we get the guys in our lives? What kit would keep them happy? Luckily, there’s Man Crates! Man Crates will send the fella in your life a gift-themed kit that he gets to open with a crowbar! This is a perfect gift for the picky guy in your life, which is great for some of us who have husbands that every other year decides they “don’t need anything!” Not thinking of anyone in particular… 🙂 And now the recently-engaged Melissa (check out her ring on our Instagram account!) will have a go-to gift option for her husband-to-be!

Happy Survivor Week everyone! May the odds ever be in your favor!

What is in your holiday survival kit?

Marilyn Style: Keep Yourself Warm

This blog title is both a great song by some Scots as well as a great Minnesota winter motto. November and December so far have been cold – colder than a Minnesota native expects at this time, even. Normally the below zero temps save themselves until January, but this year they came early! Tis the season to keep yourself warm!
gIMG_5846I saw this green tunic sweater at Target while running a million of errands and exclaimed to my boyfriend through chattering teeth “I don’t care if it’s not on sale, I’m getting it!” The joy of Target is saving insane amounts of money through the clearance section, coupons, the Red card and Cartwheel. It’s seriously one of the most sick games I play, going through the Cartwheel app to find the best deals and seeing how much I have saved so far this year. I get couponers now.
gIMG_5848The only thing that can take away my Target super saver joy is the cold and this fuzzy baby was worth full price. I LOVE IT. It’s cozy, can be paired with leggings, is a great “lazy girls” outfit without looking like PJ’s and is warm warm warm.
gIMG_5847As you know, I don’t care much for spending money on basics but I ended up putting together an outfit made up of them! This concerned me, so I had to bring some flair with my faux fur vest as well as some positively adorable deer earrings from A Delightful Shop, the jewelry store Brianna and I have been fawn-ing over lately (get it?). I think they are so fun poking out from under my hat and sea of unmanageable hair: it is its own forest!
gIMG_5850I went almost-Christmas with the burgundy socks and olive tunic, but I think it’s time to take the Christmas-stigma away from red and green and let them live in harmony no matter the time of year! I will save the obnoxious bright green/red combos for ugly Christmas sweaters and this guy.
What I Wore:
Tunic: Target
Leggings: Target
Vest: Thrifted
Hat: Thrifted
Socks: Steve Madden
Boots: Target

Marilyn Style: Creature Comfort

Well, it’s definitely time for comfy clothes. With cooler temps, holiday snacks and plain old laziness in full swing, I find myself gravitating towards comfy and easy outfits.
1IMG_6010Being comfy doesn’t have to mean a tiger onesie (which is what you can find me in every second of every day I’m not in public). When I had to change out of the warmth of my onesie, I made sure to keep the creature theme going. This knit vest (complete with maroon bunnies on it) is one of my favorite winter accessories. Normally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in gray (because it makes me look dead) but I made an exception when I purchased this. I used to have a pet bunny named Baxter and I could not resist wearing a reminder of him around. The fur-trimmed hood is also a big plus, as sometimes one hood is not enough when you are wearing a hooded coat in Minnesota.
1IMG_60171IMG_6020I offset the gray with my favorite green shirt and plenty of brown tones. I don’t recall where I got this vintage brown skirt but I know that I have treasured it for a long time. It is one of those basic but chic things I feel like goes with everything and fits me perfectly. I don’t have many basics in my closet so when I get something that I like, you can bet I’m going to take care of it!
1IMG_6018I thrifted this hat a year ago and still had yet to wear it out of the house. I was struggling to style it in a way that didn’t look matronly and I think that this was the perfect quirky outfit to do that with! The real reason for this hat was to hide my bed hair and lack of make up for a trip into the city. I told you, this season brings the lazy out in me. Sometimes a zany outfit is all you need to distract people from your poor showering habits 🙂
 What I Wore:
Skirt: Thrifted
Shirt: Target
Vest: Forever 21
Tights: Thrifted
Boots: ModCloth
Hat: Thrifted

Marilyn Style: Frozen

So although Brianna brought back some warm weather this weekend, before that and after that (today it is blizzarding…) have been a little too wintery for pre-Thanksgiving. That’s Minnesota for you! I tried to mix some of my fall fashion with winter, and although I loved the look, unfortunately I was quite FROZEN by the end of the day.

Let it go, Let it go…..
eIMG_5829I felt like an ice princess in this maxi I recently purchased from a vintage shop on Instagram and although it’s going to make the perfect fall dress, I couldn’t wait another year to let it shine. It’s a little big and you know I like my waist cinched, but when something is this pretty, you get let it go (Ahem).
eIMG_5822eIMG_5813I was VERY excited to wear this cape that I bought for the shop (and is still for sale if you are interested). I couldn’t let it go (AHEEEM) with out a little test drive! Perfect, fleecy and made me feel like some sort of royalty! I love that there is a built-in scarf and the way the “sleeves” look when spread out is a dream. Someone please take this from me before I decide that I need it.
eIMG_5812eIMG_5807Here is the problem with this whole get up: it was around 0 degrees when I wore it. I wore tights underneath to try to stay warm but unless Brianna goes back to Florida to get us some heat, I may have to retire it until spring arrives again. You can’t see them in this maxi, but I am wearing some boots that I will also have to retire, as they are more fashion than function when you are standing in snow. You can’t blame a girl for trying!

As you may notice, I tried out my new setting lotion the night before for some curls. It works really well. I pulled it back with a cute hair pin I got from my mom. If anyone is ever interested in some insane body, foam rollers and setting lotion is the way to go!
What I Wore:
Dress: Instagram Shop (not sure which)
Cape: Thrifted
Shoes: ModCloth
Hair Pin: Gift

Jackie Style: Autumn Remix

Ok, I promise this is the last time I will wear these Brickyard Buffalo scarves in an outfit for a while. They’re just so comfy! I didn’t even plan it this time – it just happened.
IMG_6400We’ve officially hit snow season here in Minnesota. I’m glad I got this week’s photos before the snow started! That’s one less week of photos inside the house. No promises for the future.
IMG_6392IMG_6398This week’s outfit is a bit of a remix on a favorite spring dress. I chose accessories with autumn tones to be seasonally appropriate. Why can’t floral be an autumn print too??
IMG_6417IMG_6395I held off wearing sweater tights for as long as I could, because if I had started wearing them when it was in the 50s, I would have gotten acclimated to wearing them in warmer temps and this winter would be miserable. Sweater tights/leggings are the only way to survive a Minnesota winter with dresses. And I can’t accept a five-to-six-month period without dresses. No thank you!
IMG_6408My favorite part of this outfit is the belt. It’s a vintage find from an estate sale three or four years ago. The leaf is so gorgeous!
IMG_6407If you need me, I’ll be under five blankets with a cup of tea. Hibernation is inevitable.

What I Wore:
Dress: ModCloth (also seen here)
Cardigan: Thrifted
Scarf: Brickyard Buffalo
Belt: Thrifted
Tights: ModCloth
Shoes: TJ Maxx
