Jackie and Marilyn | Movie Night Done Right

I recently went on a little date with my husband to go see The Martian, and despite my trepidation that it was going to give me hella anxiety as most epic space movies do, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The theater we usually go to has plush leather recliners for EVERY SEAT so I knew I wanted to wear something comfortable.
Hooded2Enter: A fall favorite of last year, this adorable houndstooth jacket. I’m glad I recently dug this jacket up, as I almost forgot it existed over the summer. It’s got a giant hood to snuggle in and it is very warm for a “light” jacket!
Hooded6I didn’t want to go as far as to wear yoga pants to the theater, not because I am against going out in them, but because I didn’t want to be so comfy that I fell asleep. I opted for my most comfy pair of jeans from ModCloth instead.Hooded3 I am so excited to have these boots back in rotation for the colder months, too!  I got them at an end of the season sale from ModCloth last year and they are my new favorites. For $20, I couldn’t pass them up and I am glad that I didn’t!

Jackie Style: Chevron the Town

Where did all the snow go??? Well wherever it went, it was a short vacation because the snow came back this morning. IMG_6853I didn’t even bother wearing a coat when my husband and I went Christmas shopping this weekend, it was that warm. I made it across the parking garage without freezing and didn’t have to carry a bulky coat around the mall. That actually might be a Christmas miracle!

I’ve been pretty excited to wear this dress. Lularoe had an AMAZING Black Friday deal that I couldn’t pass up, and I got free shipping thanks to my consultant Amanda 🙂 But ultimately the selling point was when I saw this beauty.

IMG_6871It’s the same Amelia dress I already own but in a delightful mustard and grey chevron pattern. I love mustard and grey together. So much. It’s a color palette that is neutral but not boring and transitions into different seasons very well – it just depends on how you accessorize. Chevron is such a fantastic pattern, too. It’s so flattering! Unlike horizontal stripes, you don’t feel wider than you actually are.

IMG_6914I also cannot stress enough how comfortable Lularoe’s dresses are. I felt so at ease running around the Mall of America (yes, the very one) in this frock. And pockets!

IMG_6859I chose darker accessories for this dress, which included bringing one of my Brickyard Buffalo scarves back out. How could I not pair the forest green with the mulberry booties?

IMG_6891IMG_6887For jewelry, I went for some more of my favorite wood earrings from A Delightful Shop. I seriously cannot get enough of these. They’re so intricately designed but not at all flashy. It’s everything I want in my jewelry.

And for anyone who’s been curious, I’m a week and a half into my second round of nail polish and it’s already chipping like mad. My three and a half week old Jamberry accent nail? Still going strong 🙂 I’m excited to do a full manicure soon!

IMG_6915I hope you’re all enjoying the holiday season!

Jackie Style: Giving Thanks

I must have brought some of the Orlando warmth back with me last week because all of the snow melted this weekend! But don’t worry, Minnesota will fix that soon enough.

Before I truly dedicate to Christmas and winter, I wanted to get one last outfit of harvest-like hues in. Thank I realized I was wearing a green dress with a red cardigan. Oh well.

IMG_6536It was just barely warm enough to wear this dress and cardigan with sweater tights, but not on their own. I definitely wore my winter coat while reviewing photos on my camera. I’ll have to resign to taking photos only inside soon.
IMG_6528IMG_6546Sweater tights are my jam all through winter (you can’t NOT wear dresses! At least I can’t) but they can be boring at times. A lot of the ones I find that are worth their salt are black or brown and rarely have patterns. That’s why I love these houndstooth tights so much! Plus my affinity for houndstooth in general.
IMG_6549In addition to the tights, I wore accessories with fall colors or symbols. I’ll miss you, fall. Until we meet again.
IMG_6548IMG_6547I had an extra special accessory this week too, and I will have it for weeks to come I am sure: I recently tried Jamberry thanks to my friend Sarah and I love it! I am really horrendous at painting my nails (see photo below for proof…) so this is huge for me. And it lasts! They last time I put it on it last for quite a while, but then I went to a water park and all bets are off for anything on your nails. Keep checking the blog to see how the nails transition for the next week or two!
IMG_6557This week I am grateful and humbled by all I have to be thankful for this year: loving husband, our new puppy, friends and family, a job that is immensely satisfying, working with Melissa on this blog and the continued inspiration I get from other fashion and lifestyle bloggers. Give thanks to the ones you love this week. They deserve it!

Jackie Style: All Business

My new job uses a business casual dress code, which has been some getting used to. My last job was “workplace casual” – code for “keep everything respectfully covered and look clean.” It’s given me a new challenge to create outfits that are appropriate and still me.

One thing I’ve found, based on how I dressed for my interviews and how I continue to dress now, is that I must believe houndstooth is the pattern of professionals. Or writers, at least.

When I incorporate color into my business casual outfits, I like to keep things neutral with that one special pop. This black-and-white dress and blazer combo create a fun, clean palette that let the shoes, and to some extent the rust tights, shine. It’s playful without being too much.

I’ve had this houndstooth dress for years and I still love finding new ways to wear it. Plus, it’s houndstooth! And I have a writing job now! Hooray for the pattern of writers (according to me, I guess)!

Dress: ModCloth (old, similar)

How do you keep your wardrobe fun at the office?

Marilyn Style: Howdy There, Pilgrim

I’m back in black, as spring has taken a slight hiatus. It went hard for a good three days, so I guess it deserves a break. (Note: If there was a sarcasm font, it would be applied to the previous sentence).

Yes the weather got colder and I gave in. I refuse to wear pants, but I know when it’s best to dress a little warmer, and a little more somber (RIP Spring!).

I acquired this “pilgrim” dress (that’s as best as I can describe it) from ModCloth this winter and wanted to make sure I got to wear it one more time before I retire it for the season. Normally I dress it up with a colored belt or colored tights, but since black was the theme I kept it simple with my black tights and black boots.

My new favorite sweater that I have been wearing as a jacket topped off the look; even if it didn’t, I’d still probably be wrapped up in it. I love houndstooth and am so happy it’s coming back. I will resist the urge to wear this with my new houndstooth shorts (even I know better…maybe). My workplace brings in vendors sometimes, so this little beauty is from a local boutique called Mainstream Boutique. Nothing like spending money while you’re trying to make it.

My ears are from ModCloth, because lets face it, most of my closet is.

Jackie Style: Complementary, My Dear

Happy first day of spring, everyone! If you didn’t get up to see the sunrise today, make sure you see the sunset – I think it’s neat to see it rise directly east and set directly west on the equinoxes 🙂

The past couple of weeks have been nuts at work. I have been working on editing a manuscript at my job, trying to meet the print deadline – lots of late nights! When work is stressing you out it’s hard to focus on your outfit, but I find it gives me that extra burst of energy: I look good, therefore I can do ANYTHING!

However, I definitely was busy so I stuck with a staple of mine: the Coach Tour dress from ModCloth.

I love the comfort and versatility of this dress. I have it in a host of colors (unfortunately this one is no longer available) and I love finding new ways to accessorize with it. Normally I blend neutrals to let the rust color shine, but I chose a blue cardigan for this outfit to add some complementary tones.

Rust is still a bit new to me. If you had asked me a few years ago if I look good in any form of orange, I would have said “heck no!” Now I love the color and enjoy adding it to my wardrobe. Gotta love when trying something new pays off!

I added some texture to this outfit with houndstooth sweater tights. I love the subtle pattern!

I brought out the handmade jewelry this week. My earrings came from an Etsy shop, which unfortunately is no longer selling fabric button earrings (P.S. I LOVE button earrings!). The necklace has been in my wardrobe for nine years! I bought it at the Minnesota State Fair right before I began high school and wore it almost exclusively through those years. And where did the adorable button bracelet come from? Melissa! She used to sell them at a vintage clothing store in Fargo while we were attending college, and I bought it before I knew she made it.

Also, thanks to my friend Nathan who let me borrow his Canon EF telephoto lens – I’ve been contemplating buying one and he let me take his for a test run! I’m really enjoying it so far, and now that the weather is thawing I can’t wait to take more photos outdoors!
