Jackie and Marilyn | What Season Is It Anyway?

I recently moved (read: am still moving) and have been trying to keep some seasonal clothes set aside in a suitcase so that I can easily access them while everything is still packed. The problem? I don’t know what season it is! We have been having unseasonable highs in the 60s, we had some snow and freezing temps yesterday and this Halloween is promising to be a mild again. The rollercoaster of Midwest weather! So I decided to be prepared for a little bit of everything!
sweaterweather1This maxi skirt is something I would normally wear in the spring and summer as it is light and floral, but it is the perfect amount of warmth for a 60-degree day! I slapped some tights on under it for when it was almost 20 degrees cooler in the morning, but by the time I got home from work they were ready to be set free!
sweaterweather2I’m a big fan of the button up sweater from ModCloth because it’s notΒ that warm. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good warm sweater, but the knit in this one leaves a lot of ventilation and is perfect for those in between days. I only had a tank top on underneath it, so I was happy and comfortable in leaving it on all day.
sweaterweather3I wanted to wear my pretty lacy boots one last time, as I’m sure I will be trading them for a more rugged pair soon! It is nice to have a boot that your feet aren’t overwhelmingly hot in for times like these, though!
sweaterweather5I played up the whimsy of this outfit with a butterfly belt I got at a local garage/vintage sale. I’d say, with out the faux fur on my sweater you would think this was a spring outfit! Maybe we could just skip winter and go straight to spring? I’ll start up a petition!

Jackie and Marilyn | Autumn Palette

I’ve been so happy with the mildly cool weather, falling leaves and vibrant colors in Minnesota lately. It’s truly breathtaking!

I decided this week to wear an outfit that matches the lovely autumn palette outside. I tried wearing a coat and scarf because it was supposed to be a bit chilly, but I ditched it quickly – a warm dress and cardigan were enough.

IMG_4571This outfit was based around on of my favorite new items: A mustard Amelia from Lularoe. I’ve wanted one of these babies since I tried my first dress, and now it’s mine! It’s a perfect base for any fall ensemble.

IMG_4618

To keep the fall colors going, I chose a forest green cardigan, dark red leggings and brown accessories. Each piece of the outfit matches different leaves in the trees near my home πŸ™‚IMG_4612I was a little worried about this outfit at first: There are no patterns! Would it be too boring? Thankfully it wasn’t. You don’t always need a bunch of patterns – sometimes it’s enough to just wear seasonal hues! Plus, the autumn leaves don’t have a Boston Terrier pattern and they look gorgeous anyway, right? (Although that would be super adorable and amazing…)

IMG_4580For brown accessories, I chose some cognac booties, tan boot socks and a brown belt with feathers.

IMG_4631 IMG_4633Wanting to keep it a little interesting, I chose a bold autumnal leaf necklace and earrings that match but are oddly enough not from the same place! Serendipitous pairings are the best πŸ™‚

IMG_4629And because I live in Jamberry wraps lately, I’ve been sporting these lovely Country Harvest wraps thanks to my friend Sarah!

IMG_4635What I Wore:
Dress: Lularoe (other colors)
Cardigan: Thrifted
Coat: ModCloth (via Stylish Surprise)
Scarf: Brickyard Buffalo
Belt: Forever 21
Earrings: Francesca’s
Necklace: ModCloth (another color)
Leggings: Old Navy
Socks: Target
Boots: ModCloth
Nails: Jamberry

Happy fall, y’all πŸ™‚

Mackie and Jarilyn | Melissa’s Fashion Remix

We believe you don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe every season to create fun new looks! This week on Jackie and Marilyn, we are taking eight pieces – two tops, two bottoms, two dresses and two outerwear items – and mixing them into eight outfits. Shoes and accessories were limitless.

Melissa here with my fashion remix challenge. Boy, when Brianna brought up this idea I was like “That sounds Awesome!” but when I was faced with doing it I was like “Oh crap why did you agree to this torturrrree!” Haha, no, it’s really not that bad. I am notorious for having…not a lot of basics. My closet consists of ball gowns and sweatpants and not a whole lot in between, so I dreaded finding items that would mix and match well.

Once I did find these items, though, I was pumped and surprised how many possibilities for “new” outfits I actually had.

Outfit #1: Halfway to Easter

1-8outfitsAdmittedly, this is the most “fun” and least “fall” outfit I got out of the bunch. I like it, but I think it would be better suited for the spring rather than the fall as it’s just a whole lot of pastel. It might be better with a darker/more solid colored cardigan over it!

Outfit #2: Pop of Fun
2-8outfitsThis is usually not how I would style an outfit, as I usually go full force with something zany instead of adding the neutral blazer and shoes…but I like it! I will have to remind myself that sometimes simple is ok πŸ™‚
Outfit #3: Pitter-Patterns
3-8outfitsI have always been in awe of people who can layer collared shirts under things like dresses and sweaters (ahem, Brianna). It’s always been uncomfortable and frumpy-looking when I try it. I really love this look, but it took me a hot minute to get the collar to lay perfect, and it only cooperated for a couple pictures before it sat wrong over the dress again. I might have to face that layers are too much of a force to be reckoned with and leave it to the experts (ahem, Brianna).
Outfit #4: Gretal Goes To College
4-8outfits 4-HatThis outfit is probably the most “me” thing I ever could have done. All of the suede! All of the fall tones! All of the quirky vintage! I have never worn this vintage hat before even though I have had it forever and I think I finally found the outfit that it’s meant for!
Outfit #5: Green Team
5-8outfits
In the fall I usually switch to more earthy tones of all my favorite colors. I end up wearing a lot of greens and dark blues because I don’t do well with black or gray outfits. I love that this outfit looks relaxed and in the fall field with out looking boring or monotone!
Outfit #6: Anchorwoman
6-8outfits
This may be a little too matchy-matchy for some, but when you have some vintage 70s wear you’re bound to have some matching suede. It reminds me a lot of costuming for Christina Applegate’s character in the Anchorman movies, and I’m not mad about that. I also have found my new favorite pair of glasses from Coastal.com after returning for pairs. Success is mine!
Outfit #7: Back to Cool
7-8outfitsThis reminds me a lot of something I would’ve worn on my first day back to school (the most planned outfit of one’s fall!). I would always pick out some crazy stuff, but being on my parent’s dime, it would have to be functional as well. I would be too excited to wear one new thing so I would wear ALL THE NEW THINGS. I’m still this person, whether I have a first day of school or not.
Outfit #8:  Fall Ball
8-8outfitsI think this is the most balanced of the looks. Vintage, fun, but still approachable easy to pull off. A nice mixture of quirky and basics. If wearing floral in fall is wrong, I don’t want to be right!
Conclusions
Outfit that I loved the most: Gretal Goes to College (What can I say, I have a flair for the dramatic. I know not every day can be head to toe vintage and whimsy, but A LOT of days can if you play your cards right)
4-8outfitsOutfit that I loved the least: Pop of Fun. (I don’t hate it, but it ain’t me. I don’t look at it and go “yeah, I’d wear that.” More color please!)
2-8outfitsLike Brianna, I am pretty guilty of saying that I have nothing to wear and falling in to outfit ruts. I’ll take the lessons I learned from this challenge to heart and mix things up a bit more and maybe (just maybe) invest in a couple more “basics.”  Maybe one less heavily graphic printed item and one more plain-colored shirt. MAYBE. πŸ™‚

Jackie and Marilyn | Foxes and Foliage

Happy fall, everyone! Hooray for the best season ever!

One thing I love about fall is all of the fun critter prints. In particular, I love foxes. Lately I’ve found a lot of new fox things and I discovered I (almost) have a full fox outfit. If anyone knows where I can find an inexpensive fox blouse, hook a girl up!

IMG_4064 IMG_4099These knee-high fox socks are perfectly adorable! I was a little worried at first about mixing the brown with the black, but I think it works. I wore denim to make this an outfit full of neutral colors.

IMG_4080 IMG_4102The socks and skirt were delightful but adding fox flats and earrings made it even more fun! At one point I asked my husband “Is this too whimsical?” He said of course not. And I agree – if you’re going to go whimsy, might as well go all out!

IMG_4100 IMG_4101The shirt wasn’t the only piece that wasn’t “foxy.” I decided to wear a fall bow with my ponytail and only had this plaid one. Still super cute! Maybe I don’t need an outfit entirely made of one animal print…or maybe I need a fox now πŸ˜‰

IMG_4103I topped off the outfit with my absolute favorite Jamberry manicure ever: foxes!

IMG_4179What I Wore:
Bow: Forever 21
Earrings: A Delightful Shop
Skirt: Target
Skirt: Ruche
Socks: ModCloth
Shoes: ModCloth (similar)
Nails: Jamberry

This outfit was so critterful and fall appropriate that I had to wear it for one of my favorite seasonal activities: apple picking! It was a perfect autumn day πŸ™‚

Jackie and Marilyn | Go with the Flow

Although I love a good curve-hugging, spanks-needing dress, not every day calls for me to be extremely uncomfortable for the sake of fashion. Sometimes you just have to feel cool and comfy! Enter this silky dress and kimono!
Flowy2I got this high-low dress from Goodwill (where else?) and I just love it. I don’t have a lot of one-color, neutral items, so it’s hard for me to layer sometimes. Since the kimono is so colorful and loud, I thought it would be the perfect time to invest in a simple frock.
Flowy1I cannot for the life of me remember when or where I got this kimono. It may have been a gift? I’d say that that’s when you know you have too many clothes (I do) but I also have a terrible memory, so it’s usually a wash no matter what. Regardless, I love it! There aren’t many perfect warm but not too warm days to wear it, so I’m thankful for fall-ish to give me the opportunity!
Flowy4Of course, I don’t skip belting things…ever. I don’t care have “flowy” something is supposed to look, I always feel better when bringing a little shape to it. I added some cute floral earrings from ModCloth to dress it up a bit too.
Flowy3I don’t wear my glasses on the blog much, but I do wear glasses more than contacts (my eyes are raisins). I’ll never fully LOVE glasses, but it’s nice to have some fun colors to play with like these pink/purple ones.
Flowy5Of course, Mr. Wilford Brimley gets jealous when I am taking pictures without him. He wanted you to know that he is working on his fashion endeavors and sporting a very “wrinkle-chic” coat. πŸ™‚
