Marilyn Style: Jeanius

If you have been following for a while, you know that pants are my worst enemy. If I had it my way, pants would be outlawed and it would always be warm enough for a sundress. They would also have a Great Dane gummy bear delivery service but I’m still ironing out the details on that part.
cIMG_5516You may have seen Brianna’s post about the Karaoke Songstress jeans from ModCloth and I’m here to tell you SHE WAS NOT LYING. I ordered these jeans based on rave reviews from friends and customers alike and it seems there is little bad to say about these babies. Having larger hips for my body, the takeover of low rise jeans basically put the nail in the coffin for me when it comes to pants. You either buy them to fit your hips and have them big everywhere else, or you buy them to fit to the rest of your body and have your circulation cut off forevermore.
cIMG_5487As many reviewers will tell you, these jeans are perfect for any body type. They are uber stretchy without ending up slouchy and high-waisted with out being “mom jeans.” I have donated most of my other pants in a giant “who are you kidding?” purge, and now have two high-waisted, comfy pairs. When the trend doesn’t conform to you or your body, you don’t need to conform to it! Death to low rise, I will not miss knowing the color of your underwear 🙂
cIMG_5502To get completely out of character, I wore flat tennis shoes with this outfit (and I wasn’t at the gym). I bought these years ago and had yet to really wear them. I’m glad they finally have something they don’t look completely ridiculous with. I also wore a vintage flannel and my favorite fall blazer. I felt like Ellen DeGeneres most of the day and that, my friends, is a pretty good thing! (dances off the blog) Be good to one another, everyone!

Jackie Style: Leggings as Pants

I will be the first to say that leggings are not pants and they should not be treated equally.

If you wear a tunic or sweater that reaches below your hips, they can in fact be treated as pants. I have finally embraced this and it’s a very comfortable acceptance.

IMG_6165Leggings are perfect for weekend errands. Running around, sitting in the car…jeans just hold you back!
IMG_6187IMG_6140As much as I have embraced the idea of leggings as pants, I do feel like there are some boundaries. Here are my suggestions for styling leggings as your bottoms:

  • Cover your butt and genitals. Yep. I’m not saying you have to cover every inch of your body in some shame-filled form of modesty, but there are general rules of propriety for all genders. Covering these areas of your body is one of them
  • If you think your tunic or sweater might not be quite long enough, make sure to wear opaque – not translucent – leggings. Keeps your underwear or lack thereof from showing. It’s the same principle as men needing to keep their jeans from hanging too low and showing their boxers. It’s just not attractive.
  • And…that’s about it! I think as long as you keep these two guidelines in check, you’re good to go.

I love how combat boots look with leggings. I have a feeling I will be wearing this combo often!

IMG_6175It was just barely cool enough to wear a sweater with a cozy scarf this weekend. This was another amazing Brickyard Buffalo find that I’ve been wearing constantly.

What I Wore:
Scarf: Brickyard Buffalo
Sweater: Target
Cami: Old Navy
Leggings: Target
Boots: ModCloth (via Stylish Surprise)

Happy fall styling, friends 🙂 Get out and enjoy the leaves while you can!

Jackie Style: Feeling Foxy

A while back, I saw a photo of someone pairing a flannel shirt with a nice skirt. “That’s weird,” I thought, until about three seconds later when I realized it’s actually brilliant. Casual, but still dressy, and perfect for fall. It became the inspiration for this week’s outfit!

IMG_5609I paired a favorite flannel shirt with my fox skirt for a little pattern mixing. Add the leggings and combat boots and it was a comfy, stylish outfit for running errands last weekend. What a pleasant surprise!

IMG_5625The reason I love fashion blogs, Pinterest and Melissa is because you can get so inspired to revamp your wardrobe’s potential without having to buy more clothes. Certainly I don’t discourage a splurge session for your closet, but it’s not feasible all of the time.

Apparently I was feeling sassy when this one was taken 🙂

IMG_5628To keep the fox theme going, I wore my new fox earrings from A Delightful Shop, an Instagram shop Melissa got me addicted to. Jamie’s earrings are AMAZING and handmade! I bought three pairs 🙂

IMG_5655I hope you all have a good week enjoying the last few days of “summer,” even though it’s definitely already fall 🙂

Jackie Style: Record Store Day

Record Store Day was on Saturday, and it was a great day! My husband and I got up at 5:00 (!!!) am and were in line at our nearest record store with coffee by 6:30. Fun fact: watching YouTube clips of kids reacting to things makes the time go by really fast!

In honor of Record Store Day, I dug out an old classic: my Death Cab for Cutie t-shirt.

I bought this shirt at Hot Topic back in 2007 and I am surprised and delighted it still fits. There are a couple small holes at the bottom from extreme overwear but tucking it into a skirt is a fantastic solve.

Admittedly, I wore a big hoodie over this outfit while waiting in line, because that’s just smart when standing outside on an April morning in Minnesota. It turned into a decent spring day by the time we left!

I paired the t-shirt with combat boots for a Seattle feel. I bought these boots as a part of ModCloth’s Stylish Surprise. $10 for these boots is a fantastic deal!

I have loved this band for nearly a decade. I was excited to get the last copy at Electric Fetus of the live album they put out for limited release. “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” with a string arrangement? My heart.

Another fun fact: our mutual love for Death Cab led to Melissa and me becoming friends!

I was able to find everything I wanted on limited release this year. I’m a spoiled little vinyl lover. I can’t wait to see what comes out next year – it’s music Christmas!

(P.S. These are costume glasses. I put them on for some photos because I thought they were appropriate with the outfit. I’m a nerd. Or a hipster, depending on how you define it. What can I say? I love glasses!)

What I Wore:
Shirt: Hot Topic (ancient)
Cardigan: Target
Skirt: ModCloth (similar)
Leggings: Old Navy
Socks: Target
Boots: ModCloth (similar)

Did you go out for Record Store Day? What were your finds? I’d love to hear about them!

Marilyn Style: Vegas, Baby!

Finally, some summer wear! No, hell didn’t freeze over and Minnesota didn’t thaw. We are on the cusp of a snowstorm, actually. But I did spend last week in Las Vegas with my parents. A lot of things happened that needed to stay there, but I figure this outfit can be shared.

For the last day of vacation and the first day spent off the strip, I decided to go full-on flower child. I wasn’t quite sure where we were heading, so I wanted to be prepared with something I could wear my swimsuit under. Luckily I was prepared for swimming, Ferrari riding, hiking, and breathtaking views.

I wanted to wear my Forever 21 maxi skirt I got the day before, which is already one of my new favorites. I love the half slip so I can show some leg with out being in a miniskirt. And that color! Forever 21 is convincing me that maxi skirts aren’t to be feared.

I paired the skirt with my combat boots, because they were the only shoes my feet could handle after a week walking the strip. I think the mountains were much kinder to me – at least part of me was willing to hike.

I got this adorable crop top at the end of last summer in a close-out sale and have been chomping at the bit to wear it. Finally. Since it’s NSFW and I don’t have much of a social life, it may be a while before I get to wear it again.

I went through a time in my life where I bought a jean jacket every single time I went thrifting. I just recently purged my collection down to my favorite: this one. I may have shouted “Return from whence you came!” when I dropped the rest off at the thrift store.
I topped off the hippie look with a flower headband and flower earrings. I made sure the desert had a couple more flowers, they seemed to be lacking.

All in all it was a very memorable, comfortable, peace and love day! Special thanks to my feet for not leading me off a cliff and special thanks to my mom for following me around with a camera the whole trip 🙂

What I Wore:
Skirt: Forever 21
Top: Lola (now BCBG)
Jacket: Thrifted
Earrings: Forever 21
Hair Band: Forever 21
Sunglasses: Ruche
Boots: Groupon (also seen here)
