Marilyn Style: Mary Christmas

Yes, I realize it is no longer Christmas, and even though all my decorations are still up I do not mourn its passing. A day further away from the holidays means a day closer to spring, right? Hopefully sooner than I think.
That being said, I did want to share one of my holiday outfits with the blogosphere (are people still saying that?) and since we were merrily celebrating offline over Christmas, I figured I would do it now!
xIMG_6109My friend Mary was in town for Christmas and we all wanted to see her before she went to Canada (yes Canada) for her festivities. Since this was pre-Christmas day, I figured it was one of my last chances to go full on obnoxious in the holiday outfit department. Most of these things I can get away with wearing throughout the winter, but together they definitely have a deadline.
xIMG_6110Both the skirt and the sweater are vintage pieces I got in my college years and some of my most beloved. The skirt I got at an occasional sale by my home town, and the previous owner got to tell me about how well loved it was when she was my age. It’s always great when you get to meet the owner of some of your favorite older pieces! Though the mystery of who walked in your shoes or danced in your skirt before you is often romantic and fun, it really makes you appreciate vintage pieces when you meet the owner and hear the stories yourself!
xIMG_6119The sweater I got from Savers, and it is one of my favorite “winter white” things to wear. It is insanely warm and still nice and thin if you want to tuck it into a skirt. I have spilled coffee on it many a time (including right after these pictures) and I have been lucky enough to salvage it every time.
xIMG_6113Let’s talk accessories! The belt is a thrifted item, which I realize now I have many a thrifted belt. They are always 50 cents at Goodwill, so I tend to go overboard. The boots are a Christmas gift from last year from ModCloth and the earrings are a Christmas gift from the year before from ModCloth (from Brianna)!
xIMG_6118xIMG_6121It was quite the festive evening, with a lot of my college friends stuffed in a booth at my favorite pizza spot. I doubt anyone could see my outfit, but maybe that’s a good thing 🙂

Jackie and Marilyn’s Holiday Survival Kit!

‘Tis the season to become a survivor! Whether you are beyond thrilled to see your family and friends, or shaking in your boots at the thought of hearing another story from your crazy uncle, the holidays are definitely a turn from our day-to-day existence! How will we survive this new territory?

Below we each share our five must-have for the holidays!

1. Spotify.

I cannot sit in silence. Ever. I have music playing from getting ready in the morning, the car ride to work, while working at my computer and back home again. I have been a Spotify premium member since it was possible in the U.S. and now I don’t know how to live without it. Many long car trips to go to everyone’s Christmas party demand specially curated playlists and the fact that I can download the playlists to my phone to listen offline means I won’t be without it when I spend a couple days without service in the boonies!

2. Onesie PJs

This is more of a general must but especially important on those nights where you get a little too merry with the dessert tray. No one has eve felt uncomfortable in a fleece tiger suit – and if you’re going to be in your PJs around your extended family, you might as well go all out.

3. Plants vs. Zombies 2

What happens when you have already seen the whole Internet because your day is full of nothing but lounging? This game is seriously addicting. I spent a couple Christmas breaks ago defeating the first one but this version has seemingly endless levels. I welcome the challenge.

4. Elf (The Movie)

Not only a holiday staple, I am willing to watch this movie in the middle of July. That being said, you are more likely to get people to watch it with you during the holiday season. Blonde Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell in tights? How could you go wrong? They have Elf-themed Facebook stickers now, so I have been communicating with those exclusively and will continue to do so until someone intervenes.

5. Fuzzy Critters

A great thing about going house to house and visiting everyone is knowing there is (most likely) a furry animal for me to snuggle wherever I go. I’ve never met a dog or cat that I don’t want to incessantly annoy with my love. Bonus points if they snuggle with you while watching Elf 🙂

Kit_Brianna1. DSLR camera

Having my camera on me at all time is a huge must during the holidays. It’s more of less my statement necklace 🙂 Taking photos of the joy on my nieces’ faces not only helps me document these moments forever but it also reminds me that the holidays are about happiness, even when I am at my Grinchiest.

2. Roasted Chestnut tea

TeaSource, a local tea shop in Minnesota, sells the most delightful chestnut-flavored tea and it is the perfect morning cuppa during the holiday season. “Chestnuts roasting in a Santa teapot…” Doesn’t have quite the same ring but it warms my heart in the best way.

3. Sweater tights

Just because it’s frigid in Minnesota doesn’t mean I am going to NOT wear a dress to every holiday gathering we attend! Therefore, sweater tights are a necessity.

4. Annual viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life

Two words: Jimmy Stewart. The man is more or less Christmas personified (excluding religious themes from the holiday). My husband and I have had a Christmas tradition since we began living together that, in the middle of the five Christmases we attend, we take at least one night to spend as “a family.” I make a roasted chicken, we open presents and we cry into our cocoa when George Bailey’s neighbors start singing “Auld Lang Syne.” Of all of our holiday traditions, this one is my favorite!

5. Onesie PJs

I didn’t know Melissa was going to choose these but ultimately I should have. But when a girl’s right, she’s right. I get really into the holidays so I have to go for penguin-themed pajamas. Have I waddled around the house while wearing penguin onesie pajamas to delight myself during the holidays? Of course.

As long as we both have our kits, we can make it through any holiday season! But what do we get the guys in our lives? What kit would keep them happy? Luckily, there’s Man Crates! Man Crates will send the fella in your life a gift-themed kit that he gets to open with a crowbar! This is a perfect gift for the picky guy in your life, which is great for some of us who have husbands that every other year decides they “don’t need anything!” Not thinking of anyone in particular… 🙂 And now the recently-engaged Melissa (check out her ring on our Instagram account!) will have a go-to gift option for her husband-to-be!

Happy Survivor Week everyone! May the odds ever be in your favor!

What is in your holiday survival kit?

Marilyn Style: Keep Yourself Warm

This blog title is both a great song by some Scots as well as a great Minnesota winter motto. November and December so far have been cold – colder than a Minnesota native expects at this time, even. Normally the below zero temps save themselves until January, but this year they came early! Tis the season to keep yourself warm!
gIMG_5846I saw this green tunic sweater at Target while running a million of errands and exclaimed to my boyfriend through chattering teeth “I don’t care if it’s not on sale, I’m getting it!” The joy of Target is saving insane amounts of money through the clearance section, coupons, the Red card and Cartwheel. It’s seriously one of the most sick games I play, going through the Cartwheel app to find the best deals and seeing how much I have saved so far this year. I get couponers now.
gIMG_5848The only thing that can take away my Target super saver joy is the cold and this fuzzy baby was worth full price. I LOVE IT. It’s cozy, can be paired with leggings, is a great “lazy girls” outfit without looking like PJ’s and is warm warm warm.
gIMG_5847As you know, I don’t care much for spending money on basics but I ended up putting together an outfit made up of them! This concerned me, so I had to bring some flair with my faux fur vest as well as some positively adorable deer earrings from A Delightful Shop, the jewelry store Brianna and I have been fawn-ing over lately (get it?). I think they are so fun poking out from under my hat and sea of unmanageable hair: it is its own forest!
gIMG_5850I went almost-Christmas with the burgundy socks and olive tunic, but I think it’s time to take the Christmas-stigma away from red and green and let them live in harmony no matter the time of year! I will save the obnoxious bright green/red combos for ugly Christmas sweaters and this guy.

Jackie Style: Silver and Bow

Now that it’s the holiday season, it’s also time for holiday parties! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
IMG_6788I really love going straight with Christmas colors for parties. This evergreen dress works perfectly with my red vintage belt and isn’t obnoxious with the color palette.
IMG_6770IMG_6801Aside from my bracelet and penguin necklace, which is a winter party accessory give-in, I went for all bows. I know you’re not supposed to mix silver and gold, but how do I not wear this belt with these earrings, hair clip and shoes?! There’s no rules for holiday parties, folks. If it’s festive and fun, it’s fashionable.
IMG_6784 IMG_6780 IMG_6777 IMG_6783I couldn’t be more excited for the holiday season to be in full swing. Friends gathering, shopping for presents to give my loved ones, even snow! I’ll even take snow because it’s Christmas! Speaking of snow, I had to stay warm on my way to our friends’ party, so I wore THIS AMAZING CAPE. Melissa found it and decided I needed it. When the woman’s right, she’s right.

Marilyn Style: Christmas in July

Ok, so it was one of the last days of June when I wore this, but Christmas in June sounds dumb so let me use my poetic license!

IMG_4342This amazing poppy dress from ModCloth has been one I had my eye on for a very very long time. I always had it in my wish list, but every time I saved up money or gift cards to get something, there was always a dress that was more “practical” (gross). FINALLY I bit the bullet this winter and bought the dress of dreams!

I wore it a couple times over Christmas and jazzed it up with bows and green velvet blazers. As you may have already deduced, I am not one to shy away from wearing Christmas bows in my hair or don candy cane earrings. Once summer rolled around, I kind of saw this dress as a Christmas dress, and therefore forgot about it a bit.

As my apology for abandoning this ALL SEASONS dress, I wore it out to a networking event in downtown Minneapolis. It was for MNFilmTV and it was a lot of fun! My professor provided a bunch of tickets for alum, so I got to schmooze with my old classmates (and some new friends) and get all gussied up. I am terrible at talking to strangers, so I wanted to wear something that spoke for me and potentially would get the conversation going somewhere other than the weather.

I paired this dress with some fun Modcloth earrings Brianna got me a couple Christmas’s ago. I’m just bringing all the Christmas out! I also wore a belt I got with a different ModCloth dress, because belts are important. I topped it off with my simple nude wedges so I could still be comfortable standing all night.

Here is a picture of all the alum from the event’s photobooth. Can you tell we were film majors?

Do you have pieces in your closet you wear during a particular season? How have you refashioned them to be all-year items?
