Jackie and Marilyn | Crowned

I hereby crown me, Melissa, Queen of the overdressed! I wore this outfit to a My Morning Jacket concert that we ended up scoring tickets to last minute. I put on the outfit, decided it was too fancy and then proceeded to try on a billion other outfits. I finally broke the news to my fiance: “I’m sorry, but I have no normal clothes.”

Now yes, I could’ve worn jeans (barf) and a t-shirt – I promise I do OWN these things. But my desire to wear them for any occasion is very low. I was definitely the most overdressed in the crowd, but I felt comfortable and like myself – and that’s what I decided mattered!
FlowerCrown1Hanging out in a small town after moving out of the city AND working from home a lot of the time, leaves me little occasion to get dressed up for. When you have a brand new flower crown to try out, do you just let it sit in your closet? I think not!
FlowerCrown3FlowerCrown5I got this dress as a Stylish Surprise from ModCloth earlier in the spring. The anticipation of having something random sent to you sends me into a gleeful tailspin. You should’ve seen the urgency in which I texted back and forth with Brianna after they announced that it was “Stylish Surprise” season again and I couldn’t get the site to load! Thankfully, I finally got in and handed over all my money, later receiving this romantic maxi! I almost made it my wedding dress it’s so beautiful, but I have something a little more flavorful in mind.
FlowerCrown2FlowerCrown6I wanted to make this outfit a little less fancy so I decided to add a purple cardigan, even though it was warm enough to go with out. I definitely appreciated it when I walked 20 blocks back to my car in the pouring rain after the show! Looks like my bright white maxi needs to get dry cleaned now!

Flower Crown: Amazon
Dress: ModCloth
Earrings: Target
Sunglasses: Target
Cardigan: Thrifted

Jackie and Marilyn | Floral Transitions

Last week I mentioned that fall hues work just fine during spring and that no matter what I do, I always find myself turning to autumn tones. I also promised I would break out the florals soon in an effort to get in the mood for spring.

This week, I submit to you Exhibit B: Even when I try to go floral, I still end up with a fall garden.

IMG_0545But hey, at least the colors of my outfit match the blandness of Minnesota after the snow melts. It may as well have been autumn!

For me, florals will always be springy, no matter the hues. This dress is pretty light, almost to light for the chillier autumn weather, so it’s a spring staple of mine. As will sass – my favorite accessory 😉

IMG_0588Even though I paired the outfit with red tights, mustard shoes and red (flower!) earrings, I tried to keep it a little springy with a light green cardigan. This month is all about transition – winter’s over, but spring hasn’t quite taken over yet, and in Minnesota, it could snow again any day (please not again, it just went away, please please please…). You can still get away without going full spring because nature hasn’t quite caught up.

Jackie and Marilyn | Cherished Crimson Leaf

Aside from a giant snow dump yesterday (why, Minnesota? Why?!), spring has been in the air. This is the season of pastel palettes and floral frocks.

Except for me. No matter how hard I try, I am perpetually stuck in autumn.

IMG_0485This outfit is perfect for fall and yet I wear it during spring. I gravitate toward autumn tones, even when I tell myself I am going to mix it up with my color palette. A girl likes what a girl likes, I suppose.

IMG_0486And then it was too warm, so it was time to peel back the layers.

IMG_0514Heaven. Please come back, spring weather.

My friend Danielle, when I Snapchatted her my autumn-ready outfit, pulled a Leslie Knope-style compliment and called me a cherished crimson leaf. It feels like a pretty accurate description of my fondness for fall, no matter the actual season.

IMG_0516In defense of my outfit choice, nothing is really “springy” yet. When the grass was showing, it was the color of my mustard tights. None of the trees have leaves. The temperatures were gorgeous but nature didn’t look ready to be in full bloom yet, so it’s perfectly fine if I’m not, too!

IMG_0517IMG_0518I won’t begrudge a good floral outfit – I do love them and they will make their way out soon – but you can make it whatever season you want it to be. Forget “seasonal colors” – you do you!

Jackie Style: Beautiful, Naive, Sophisticated Newborn Babies

As I mentioned last week, I’m not much for Valentine’s Day. I am, however, all about Galentine’s Day

What’s Galentine’s Day?! It’s only the best day of the year! The concept comes from Parks and Recreation (which ends tonight, but I refuse to believe that is actually happening…) but ladies have been celebrating ladies for ages. Now we have a name for it and it should be a national holiday!

I like to celebrate the holiday by hosting a Galentine’s Day tea party for my lady friends the weekend of Galentine’s Day, which is on February 13.

For the occasion, a fancy outfit seemed fitting.

IMG_9760IMG_9761Also, a second pair of heart tights…they were on mega clearance BEFORE Valentine’s Day, how could I not buy two pairs?!IMG_9876I chose a dress that matches my tea cups – blue and white filigree pattern. Luckily I also had a Jamberry manicure that matched too!

IMG_9890I also chose a necklace that matches my tea cups…because it’s a tea cup.

IMG_9878I love Galentine’s Day. It’s a day to get your ladies together, appreciate each other and let one another know you are loved. Nothing is more important than positive lady behavior!

Lady love of course extends to puppy ladies.

IMG_9769 IMG_9778What I Wore: Dress: ModCloth (Style Surprise)
Cardigan: Target
Necklace: Etsy
Belt: Charlotte Russe
Tights: Old Navy
Shoes: ModCloth

For the party, I baked lemon tea cakes and put out four different types of tea with make-your-own-tea-bags. Some of the guests brought some treats as well and afterward I felt like I was going to burst.

IMG_9746A couple of my lady friends brought their puppies. It’s a no boys allowed party, with the exception of babies and dogs. My friend Sarah brought her human baby, who definitely captured attention. It’s definitely one of my favorite days of the year 🙂

IMG_9996 IMG_9948 IMG_9962 IMG_9953 IMG_9977 IMG_9981 IMG_9924Did you have a Galentine’s Day party? I’d love to hear what you and your lady friends do!
