Jackie and Marilyn | Foxes and Foliage

Happy fall, everyone! Hooray for the best season ever!

One thing I love about fall is all of the fun critter prints. In particular, I love foxes. Lately I’ve found a lot of new fox things and I discovered I (almost) have a full fox outfit. If anyone knows where I can find an inexpensive fox blouse, hook a girl up!

IMG_4064 IMG_4099These knee-high fox socks are perfectly adorable! I was a little worried at first about mixing the brown with the black, but I think it works. I wore denim to make this an outfit full of neutral colors.

IMG_4080 IMG_4102The socks and skirt were delightful but adding fox flats and earrings made it even more fun! At one point I asked my husband “Is this too whimsical?” He said of course not. And I agree – if you’re going to go whimsy, might as well go all out!

IMG_4100 IMG_4101The shirt wasn’t the only piece that wasn’t “foxy.” I decided to wear a fall bow with my ponytail and only had this plaid one. Still super cute! Maybe I don’t need an outfit entirely made of one animal print…or maybe I need a fox now 😉

IMG_4103I topped off the outfit with my absolute favorite Jamberry manicure ever: foxes!

Bow: Forever 21
Earrings: A Delightful Shop
Skirt: Target
Skirt: Ruche
Socks: ModCloth
Shoes: ModCloth (similar)
Nails: Jamberry

This outfit was so critterful and fall appropriate that I had to wear it for one of my favorite seasonal activities: apple picking! It was a perfect autumn day 🙂

Jackie and Marilyn | Fly Like Paper, Get High Like Planes

We’ve had some warm weather spurts in Minnesota. No fall for me yet. Sigh.

However, I’m still not resigned to going back to my summer wardrobe. So it’s time to pull out some transitional outfits! One of my favorite transitional outfits is wearing leggings as pants. Combined with a nice tunic, it’s perfect!
IMG_3718 IMG_3740These Lularoe leggings are AMAZING! Little paper airplanes?? Yes please. With something as vibrant as this print, a couple neutral pieces were the best way to balance. I’ve tried pairing these with other prints and bold colors, but they just work better on their own.

IMG_3823 IMG_3762In order to stay cool, I put my hair in a ponytail and decided to add a bow. This particular bow is from the girls’ clearance section at Target!

IMG_3828To keep on theme with air travel, I chose my wood balloon earrings!

Jackie and Marilyn | Floral Transitions

Last week I mentioned that fall hues work just fine during spring and that no matter what I do, I always find myself turning to autumn tones. I also promised I would break out the florals soon in an effort to get in the mood for spring.

This week, I submit to you Exhibit B: Even when I try to go floral, I still end up with a fall garden.

IMG_0545But hey, at least the colors of my outfit match the blandness of Minnesota after the snow melts. It may as well have been autumn!

For me, florals will always be springy, no matter the hues. This dress is pretty light, almost to light for the chillier autumn weather, so it’s a spring staple of mine. As will sass – my favorite accessory 😉

IMG_0588Even though I paired the outfit with red tights, mustard shoes and red (flower!) earrings, I tried to keep it a little springy with a light green cardigan. This month is all about transition – winter’s over, but spring hasn’t quite taken over yet, and in Minnesota, it could snow again any day (please not again, it just went away, please please please…). You can still get away without going full spring because nature hasn’t quite caught up.

Jackie and Marilyn | Cherished Crimson Leaf

Aside from a giant snow dump yesterday (why, Minnesota? Why?!), spring has been in the air. This is the season of pastel palettes and floral frocks.

Except for me. No matter how hard I try, I am perpetually stuck in autumn.

IMG_0485This outfit is perfect for fall and yet I wear it during spring. I gravitate toward autumn tones, even when I tell myself I am going to mix it up with my color palette. A girl likes what a girl likes, I suppose.

IMG_0486And then it was too warm, so it was time to peel back the layers.

IMG_0514Heaven. Please come back, spring weather.

My friend Danielle, when I Snapchatted her my autumn-ready outfit, pulled a Leslie Knope-style compliment and called me a cherished crimson leaf. It feels like a pretty accurate description of my fondness for fall, no matter the actual season.

IMG_0516In defense of my outfit choice, nothing is really “springy” yet. When the grass was showing, it was the color of my mustard tights. None of the trees have leaves. The temperatures were gorgeous but nature didn’t look ready to be in full bloom yet, so it’s perfectly fine if I’m not, too!

IMG_0517IMG_0518I won’t begrudge a good floral outfit – I do love them and they will make their way out soon – but you can make it whatever season you want it to be. Forget “seasonal colors” – you do you!

Jackie Style: Day and Night

This weekend I needed a comfy outfit for shopping with the girls, a classy outfit for church and a fun outfit for karaoke night.

Enter Lularoe.

IMG_9225I wore this dress for many hours and it transitioned well from activity to activity. Lularoe dresses are truly fantastic and if you haven’t tried them yet, you really should! Definitely worth the investment.

Pattern mixing is a pretty common fashion trend these days, but everyone needs a little reminder that you can mix up your patterns as much as you want. Your mom’s rules of no stripes with polka dots no longer apply! I like going for one bold and one subtle pattern. Or two subtle patterns. Two bold patterns can admittedly be a bit much, but ultimately there’s some trial and error to mixing.

For me, this chevron pattern begged for polka dot tights.

IMG_9245Paired with oxfords and it was a perfect mix of everything I needed! Oxfords are good walking shoes that always make you look a little fancier.

IMG_9204Speaking of fancy, what’s fancier than a bow?? Or better yet, a bow belt? Nothing, that’s what.

IMG_9323Luna really wanted my attention during photos this week. It’s no secret that we are pup lovers here on Jackie and Marilyn, so I don’t mind showing her off 🙂

Marilyn Style: Rabbit Fur Coat

Usually the only Rabbit Fur Coat I like has to do with Jenny Lewis (most things I like have to do with Jenny Lewis). I’m more about faux fur myself but I do make an exception for this vintage/gifted sweater. I acquired it at a garage sale – along with many many other vintage goodies. Just before I left the lady who was gladly selling me all her teenage clothes also gave me this sweater. She had shown me a picture of herself wearing it and a dress I had just purchased and she thought I needed the whole outfit. I wish I could’ve kept the picture – we had strikingly similar features!
2IMG_6432I wanted to keep the rockabilly/50s theme of this outfit going with some vintage-styled newer items that have popped up in this blog before. I love love love this salmon-colored top from ModCloth, but I had yet to dare wear it in the winter. Since I was going to a concert that I knew was going to be nice and sweaty, I figured this was the best time to try!
2IMG_64422IMG_6440I styled this shirt with my crinoline skirt from Eshakti and hid some warm leggings underneath for good measure. I love that this skirt sits on my exact waist and doesn’t float around as some waist skirts do. I guess that’s the point of custom ordering with your own measurements but it does blow my mind sometimes!
 2IMG_64342IMG_6443
My new favorite shoes I bought on a whim from ModCloth during a recent sale. Normally my proportions don’t quite shine with knee-high anything, but these boots are slouchy enough to adjust to your standards and roomy enough to keep your calf from sweating away! Plus they are warm! What more could you want?
I tried to keep the accessories subtle – a black bow, some pearl earrings and a pink belt. That’s as subtle as I can get 🙂
