Marilyn Style: You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile

It seems lately all I am doing is rejecting the idea that I don’t have any “basics.” I promise, I really don’t have that many comparatively (this is coming from a girl with three black lace ball gowns) but I am trying to fix that.
zIMG_6029ModCloth has been driving me CRAZY lately with all of their sales and one-day deals. It seems like every day something I had been eyeing on the site was on super sale. This being the season of giving, I survived with buying only ONE dress. I think I deserve a round of applause! I had this cranberry-colored dress on my wish list and it already wasn’t too expensive, so when I saw it go to 50% off I figured now was the time to pull the trigger. I don’t have a lot of go-to holiday dresses that aren’t obnoxiously in your face, so I am glad to have something a little more basic and comfortable for the many celebrations coming up.
zIMG_6035Keeping the “basic” theme going, I paired this dress with a leather-trimmed black blazer, cozy as ever fleeced-lined tights, my flannel boots and a pearl necklace and earrings to class it all up.
zIMG_6043This headband is my new favorite, as I have always struggled with wanting to wear them but having too large of a head to make headband-wearing a headache-free reality. Nothing like cutting off circulation to your forehead to make you feel pretty! This headband is the first one I have found that stays in place with out giving me a headache! Plus, it’s sparkly!
zIMG_6042My favorite accessory of all time, though, has to be this smile. I have been ragged on A LOT by strangers and family alike for not smiling more. It’s not that I am never happy, I just suffer from Resting Bitch Face, as I know most of us do. When I force a smile for pictures, I end up looking deranged or like I’m about to cry, so I normally just leave the smile out all together. My boyfriend snapped this when we were “done” taking blog photos. He cracks me up a lot, so the genuine smile makes an appearance! Photographic proof that I do not have a heart of ice (sorry, Elsa).

If you have been following for a while, you know that pants are my worst enemy. If I had it my way, pants would be outlawed and it would always be warm enough for a sundress. They would also have a Great Dane gummy bear delivery service but I’m still ironing out the details on that part.
cIMG_5516You may have seen Brianna’s post about the Karaoke Songstress jeans from ModCloth and I’m here to tell you SHE WAS NOT LYING. I ordered these jeans based on rave reviews from friends and customers alike and it seems there is little bad to say about these babies. Having larger hips for my body, the takeover of low rise jeans basically put the nail in the coffin for me when it comes to pants. You either buy them to fit your hips and have them big everywhere else, or you buy them to fit to the rest of your body and have your circulation cut off forevermore.
cIMG_5487As many reviewers will tell you, these jeans are perfect for any body type. They are uber stretchy without ending up slouchy and high-waisted with out being “mom jeans.” I have donated most of my other pants in a giant “who are you kidding?” purge, and now have two high-waisted, comfy pairs. When the trend doesn’t conform to you or your body, you don’t need to conform to it! Death to low rise, I will not miss knowing the color of your underwear 🙂
cIMG_5502To get completely out of character, I wore flat tennis shoes with this outfit (and I wasn’t at the gym). I bought these years ago and had yet to really wear them. I’m glad they finally have something they don’t look completely ridiculous with. I also wore a vintage flannel and my favorite fall blazer. I felt like Ellen DeGeneres most of the day and that, my friends, is a pretty good thing! (dances off the blog) Be good to one another, everyone!

Jackie Style: Business Time

I apologize in advance for the background of my photos this week – it’s hard to take photos in a hotel room with a telephoto lens!

I am traveling for an annual work conference and have to look as professional as I can. I tend to only use carry-on when I travel, which makes packing five outfits a little…colorful 🙂

This outfit is a standard example of what I like to wear while traveling for business. I tend to plan my outfits around the bulkier accessories (shoes, outerwear, etc.) and bring one of each thing, then bring a bunch of jewelry, tights, and other easy-to-pack accessories. Put it together with five dress/skirt-and-blouse combos, and we are set!

This year I brought a pair of classic and comfy wedges (because I walk with purpose at this conference…that’s business for “run around like a chicken with my head cut off”) and a fun new blazer. I love the green lining and how it makes for fun sleeves.

Admittedly, I did not get a lot of photos this week. I am pretty impressed by the MacGyver-like tripod I made out of hotel furniture, but it only worked for so many photos. Unfortunately, this means all I have left for you are cell phone selfies. I promise I will be better once I am back in my home turf 🙂

I don’t wear makeup as much on a day-to-day basis, but I do for business.

Seriously love this blazer because it is great casual or professional. Paired it with a tee, jeans, and some casual loafers for my off-time that evening. This is the face of a girl ready for guac.

What are some of your travel tips for packing light and looking fab?

Marilyn Style: Something Corporate

Let it be known that although I like to think I’m a Punk Rock Princess, I can do the corporate thing sometimes. My office is business casual but a lot of people like to go the “Mind your own Bidness Casual” route (me very much included). That being said, sometimes I look like I’m trying! Look like I’m trying = put a blazer on it.

This baby blue blazer is from Forever 21. It’s something I am excited about wearing again now that spring it here. I paired it over one of my dresses from the “Stylish Surprise” event from ModCloth. Basically, you tell them your size, and they send you something from their dead stock for $10. I have participated before and got pants (GROSS!) but this time around I was pleased to get three dresses! This dress has a lace pattern and although it’s a little boxy for my taste, it’s nothing a belt can’t fix.

If you ever need a nice waist belt, the children’s section is the way to go! This one came in a three pack from Target (all pastels!). Recently a lot of stores seem to carry belts that you wear around your hips, so I always frequent the children’s section!

The tights are also from Target and are Spanx believe it or not! If you ever want to not breathe while looking fabulous, this is the way to go! They are actually really comfy, but I like them for how thick they are without being tights – I have had them for a year and they don’t run!

The earrings are a ModCloth purchase – cameos for the win! It is hard for me to find a perfect-sized stud; a lot of the ones I am attracted to end up looking too chunky or miniscule. Very happy with these!

Lastly, I can’t be totally business. I don’t remember where I got these boots, but I do love them. So much so that I have green spray paint all over one of them from a craft project. Whoops! Too comfy and studded to care!
